Refugee Camp Statistics: Rwanda

Number of Refugees

Rwanda hosts just over 172,000 refugees, with nearly 46% from the Democratic Republic of Congo hosted in five camps, and 53% from Burundi hosted in Mahama camp and urban areas. The influx into Rwanda is about 150 people per week.

Electricity Access

We visited three camps (Gihembe, Mahama, Kigeme), which all did not have adequate access to electricity. Currently fuel wood is the main source of energy in camps.

Water Availability

Currently water is extracted form nearby water bodies (e.g. Akagera River in Mahama Camp), or from ground-water sources. It is then chemically treated on-site using Chlorine, Alum and Lime. Studies have shown that the quality still does not adhere to Government Standards.
